You can feel close to the culture of Ise with the Ise Cut Paper mounted in each room. Ise Cut Paper is a traditional Ise craft and the paper is used in dyeing printed silk and yukata (Japanese robes). In some rooms you will find yukata and lounge wear for women which have been dyed using Ise Cut Paper. You can experience at first hand the culture that grew up in Ise.
Ise Cut Paper
Ise Cut Paper is made by sticking pieces of Mino paper together with persimmon tannin and then painstakingly cutting out fine patterns with small knives. This traditional craft has a history of over 1000 years and is recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
*For a fee you can cut by hand your own Ise Cut Paper bookmark.
Ise Cotton is a fabric which has been produced in the Ise region since the Edo period. Its advantage is that it is short staple cotton which is soft and fine to the touch. It is made into cloth which does not wrinkle easily. The more you use it the better it will feel. It is a Designated Traditional Craft of Mie Prefecture.
